Overview of the ABM

The Adaptation Benefits Mechanism (ABM), developed and hosted by the African Development Bank (AfDB), aims to mobilize new and sustainable financing for climate change adaptation, directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It constitutes the first non-market mechanism registered under Article 6.8 of the Paris Agreement, responding to African countries’ demand for a fair instrument to finance adaptation.

The ABM enables greenhouse gas emitters and actors engaged in climate responsibility (governments, companies, financial institutions, philanthropies) to directly contribute to adaptation costs in developing countries by financing projects certified based on their measurable adaptation benefits.

ABM Cycle for Project Developers

The Adaptation Benefits Mechanism (ABM) is a results-based finance mechanism that aims to attract public and private sector funding to projects and programmes that enable households, communities, economies, and ecosystems to adapt to and build resilience against the adverse effects of climate change.

ABM Validation

The ABM validation process ensures that project proposals meet the required standards for climate adaptation benefits. This includes verification of the project methodology, baseline assessment, and expected climate resilience outcomes.

ABM Registration

Once validated, projects can be officially registered in the ABM registry. This step establishes the project within the ABM framework and creates transparency for all stakeholders, enabling monitoring of progress and results.

ABM Grievance

The ABM grievance mechanism provides a structured process for stakeholders to raise concerns or complaints regarding the implementation of projects. This ensures accountability and transparency, allowing for timely resolution of issues.

ABM Activity Cycle

The ABM activity cycle outlines the entire project lifecycle from conception to completion, including planning, implementation, monitoring, verification, and issuance of adaptation benefit certificates.
